FAQs

What is your approach to pet training?

I use only aversive free, positive reinforcement training  techniques to teach owners how to work with their dogs.  It is scientifically proven that these methods are the best methods for teaching and learning.

I am a member of Force Free Trainers of WI and Pet Professional Guild.  I frequently attend seminars and workshops to enhance my skills and learn new techniques.

What breeds do you work with?  Are their age limits?

I work with all breeds and ages of dogs.  While there are genetic traits bred into dogs, such as hunting, herding, etc. how dogs (animals) learn is universal.  The old myth of "old dogs can't learn new tricks" is exactly that, a myth.  Often older dogs are easier to train than puppies because they aren't distract iced by noises, leaves, etc.

My puppy is only 8 weeks old.  Is that too young to start training?

Heck, no!  Puppies start to learn the day they are born so 8 weeks is not too young to start.   Veterinarians recommend that a dog be older, due to vaccination schedules, but because there aren't any other dogs around, we can get started right away.

Do you recommend Board and Train for puppies?

Yes and No.  I encourage my clients to be the most important thing to their new puppy, but sometimes, owners need a little help getting started.  That is where Board and Train can help.  I work on housetraining, crate training, introduce sit, and basic house manners.  Getting started off on the right paw can help tremendously.

My dog is over-reactive and I need help.  What should I do?

Please contact me.  I have extensive knowledge in dealing with dogs with problems.  From fearful behavior, over-reacting to situations, nipping, etc. I can help.  There is no charge for an initial conversation.

I'm looking to adopt a dog.  Is there anything I should look for?

YES.  Not all rescues and shelters are created equal.  when adopting a dog (or any pet), the rescue and shelter should be transparent, know what the dog is like, what the dog needs are (behavioral and medical), answer all your questions, tell you everything they know about the dog.   Dogs should not be adopted off a transport.  Dogs needs time to decompress in order to assess their temperament and health.  If the rescue is just doing the paperwork, what do they actually know about the dog?

I like your philosophy, but you are far away.  What are my options?

Please contact me.   Virtual lessons via Zoom are an option or I can refer you to one of my colleagues.  I've been working with dogs a long time and have contacts throughout the state.    Try visiting Force Free Trainers of WI to find a trainer in your area.
