WALKING HARNESSES
Harnesses are amazing tools to help your dog to walk nicely WITH you -vs- taking you for a drag. Since they clip in the front, the pivot point of your dog is in the front, so if you stop when your dog pulls, your dog turns around. Dogs acclimate to them quickly and they work almost instantly.
#1) Freedom Harness. MY FAVORITE. Around $45.00, but well worth it. If your order directly from the company, they will size the harness for you if you send your dog’s measurements. A double-clip leash is also available for purchase for extra control.
#2) Balance Harness. #1 rated no-pull, front clip harness by Whole Dog Journal. Each strap adjusts individually, allowing for perfect fitting to each dog. Cost is $40.00.
#3) Sensation Harness: These harnesses are only available through third party companies.
#4) Easy-Walk Harness: These were one of the first walking harnesses and are widely available in pet stores. They are not as padded and can rub on the skin, but if fitted properly, that’s not a significant problem.
LEASHES/COLLARS
I do not advocate the use of pinch or prong collars as they are an aversive method to teaching your dog how to walk. They can also harm your dog’s neck and trachea.
Retractable leashes are BIT tge best for working with dogs. They are great for exercise, but not if you want to work with your dog since you have to rely on them retracting to bring your dog closer. Plus, 25’ away is too far away from you when trying to teach your dog how to walk on leash, to pay attention to you, etc.
Limited slip, Martingale or D-Ring collars are awesome! They tighten when your dog pulls to help prevent your dog from slipping his/her leash.
Max and Neo. MY FAVORITE. Donates one-for-one collars and leashes purchased to rescues and shelters.
